MEC LEHARI SHOCKED TO THE CORE ON THE SPIKE OF GBV The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari is still reeling with shock on the numerous cases of gender based violence (GBV) reported in the Province. The latest shocking incidents are reported in Taung. Three weeks ago on 07th June 2020, the 36 year old man who later committed suicide allegedly stabbed his 32 year old pregnant girlfriend in what the family described as an unprovoked incident. The Selaolo family in Lokaleng Village in Taung is still traumatised by the incident they witnessed. The 32 year old Bonolo Selaolo who according to the family was heavily pregnant with the accused’s child, had a normal day with the deceased at home. The 36 year old accused, the family said, informed them he wanted to take the bath. Bonolo was in the same room where the accused was ostensibly taking a bath when they were jolted by her screams as he began to stab her. The accused later according to family committed suicide by slashing his wrists and throat. Bonolo was at once taken to the hospital (Taung and later Klerksdorp) where she is still fighting for her life. Unfortunately her unborn child didn’t survive. “I still cannot believe that something as horrific as this is continuing to happen in our communities. We must find a way to raise our children to respect one another and above all to value life”, said MEC Lehari when informed of what happened. According to the locals gender based violence is becoming a norm in and around Taung but doesn’t get reported. Just a stone’s throw from the Selaolo family, another family has been traumatised by what happened to their 17 year old son. A local man now on a second bail for similar offence is alleged to have chained their son behind his vehicle and dragged him before pelting him with rocks. He was arrested for attempted murder in what looked like a premeditated incident. The incident sent shockwaves when the video allegedly filmed by locals was shared on social media. “What has gone wrong with us? A bothoboile? Have we lost our humanity, our human values”, asked shocked MEC Lehari. His words were echoed by Kgosi Tshepo Mankuroane of the Batlhaping ba ga Phudutswana. “What our own children are doing defy all forms precept of logic”, said Kgosi Mankuroane. He pleaded with Government to look into psychosocial challenges that seem to have befallen his otherwise hitherto serene territory. “We are more than ready to make land available for development of law enforcement structures”, offered Kgosi Mankuroane. The Department’s delegation was accompanied by the Mayor Kgosi Nyoko Motlhabane and the area’s Cluster Commander Brigadier Tlotleng. END Next Articles+
